The original core of the village dates from the twelfth century; Cerquetum the name, from the dialect cerqua (oak) or from the Latin circus (circular shape of the castle). The medieval town had in fact three rings of defensive walls dating from the same period. You can still admire the medieval cistern. Traditionally known for the manufacture of giujaje, sieves of reeds and brambles, Cerqueto can offer visitors an interesting testament of the Umbrian Renaissance: Some examples are the outstanding San Sebastiao mural painting (1478) of Perugino origin and the Crucifixion (1515) of Tiberius of ‘Assisi in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta Important contemporary art work commissioned in 1994 by Michelangelo between Cerqueto (better known as Frate Indovino) is the small chapel of SS. Crucifix decorated with mosaics by p. Ugolino from Belluno, author of Our Lady of Health in St. Anthony in Perugia.
